The South Devon Chilli Farm is set on a 10 acre farm in the scenic South Hams area of South Devon just outside the village of Loddiswell, near Kingsbridge. They have been growing chillies on a large scale since 2003, growing 10,000 chilli plants each year!
The heat in chillies comes from an alkaloid chemical called Capsaicin of which there are many different types and the reason why heat from different chillies is felt in different parts of the mouth. Despite what people normally believe, the capsaicin is not contained in the seed but in the fleshy strip inside the chilli where the seeds are attached. The heat is traditionally measured in Scoville units, invented by Mr Wilbur Scoville back in 1912!
