Rioja Crianza 2010, A traditional, savoury style of Crianza in which rich blackberry and cassis fruit mingles with more mature notes of leather and spice, as well as creamy, toasty notes from the oak ageing. Dense, long and vibrant on the palate. Alcohol content 13%. Grape 100% Tempranillo. Cork closure.
Winemaker Miguel Angel de Gregorio grew up practically steeped in Rioja – his father was cellarmaster at Marqués de Murrieta – and rose to prominence in the region when he founded the highly regarded Finca Allende in 1995. A vocal exponent of terroir expression, Miguel only uses vineyards on iron-rich clay for Finca Allende. Twenty hectares on limestone are kept separate, and bottled as Finca Nueva. The difference is profound: as so often happens, the limestone brings a finesse and delineation to the Finca Nueva wines, while making them accessible earlier than their dense, tannic stablemates. Needless to say, the white and rosé benefit just as much from this exceptional soil. Stylistically, the whole range deftly straddles Rioja’s traditional-modern divide, with succulent fruit but plenty of savoury complexity. These are seamless wines, the product of a great talent. Vineyard The densely planted, bush-trained vines average twenty-two years old, on calcareous soil. Organic fertiliser and ploughing are used in place of chemical fertiliser and herbicides. The grapes were picked by hand from the 18th of October.
