Crofter's Ewe, a brand new cheese made from British sheep's milk by Dorset based Ford Farm.  When entered into the World Cheese Awards last year this cheese was so new it was still unamed, but went on to win a much deserved Gold Award.  Theses awards take place at the BBC Good Food Show at the NEC, an annual competition which on this occasion attracted entries from 2,727 cheese producers worldwide!

The idea for a new sheep's cheese came from Mike Pullin who regularly holidays in Spain. He wanted to see if he could challenge Ford Farm's cheesemakers to create a cheese similar to the Spanish Manchego.  Using traditional methods and the milk from local Frieslands and Polled Dorsets, the process was performed entirely by hand and the cheese pressed into cylindrical moulds which were then cloth bound and left to mature for 6 months. Head cheesemaker at Ford Farm, Martin Crabb, was impressed ... but would the judges be?

It seems they did "This cheese seems to have hit the mark with its distinctive butterscotch colour, its sweet, lingering taste as well as a crumbly texture"

Introduced into The Cheese Larder as the Cheese of the Month in July, this beautifully smooth and creamy cheese would best be described as being a cross between a manchego and a cheddar.  But don't take our word for it - come in and try some today.

Pasteurised. Not suitable for vegetarians.
